Humble carpet usually tells us how old the house is before anyone mentions it. The town grew in layers. Oil came in with the 1904 strike, Humble Oil and Refining got its start here in 1911 (it later became part of Exxon), and the blocks around Main Street and the Humble Museum on Higgins Street are still the oldest part of town. The subdivisions came afterward in waves, and each wave left its own kind of floor behind.

In the older houses near Main Street we often find carpet that has been through a rental shampooer more times than anyone can count. Shampoo leaves soap in the fibers. Soap stays tacky, tacky carpet grabs dirt, and so those rooms go gray again a few weeks after every cleaning. Woodland Hills went up mostly in the 1970s and 80s, and Kenswick Forest and Mill Creek have a similar feel. Fall Creek is the newcomer, a big master-planned community inside Beltway 8 near the Eastex Freeway. The builder carpet out there is still fairly young. Clean it early, while the hallway still matches the bedrooms. Once a lane has been ground in for five years, it comes back lighter, but it rarely comes all the way back.

There's no storefront. The van comes to your driveway, and the technician starts by walking the rooms with you, pointing out what should come out easily and what might not, and quoting the price before any equipment comes through the door. Spots get pre-treated. Then the carbonated solution goes down and the machine pulls the loosened soil back up with very little water left behind. Most rooms are ready for bare feet in about an hour.
